Frequently Asked Questions

Why should you buy a Mystrix over other grid controller like Novation Launchpad?

There are a few grid controllers out there on the market already, notable Novation Launchpad and Monome.

First, credit where credit is due. Mystrix has taken a lot of inspiration from Novation Launchpad and Monome. It would not exist without those prior arts.
Lets' compare Mystrix to Launchpad as the most prominent example.
Launchpad is a very focused music controller. Mystrix started as an alternative for visual performance since Novation Launchpad isn’t really designed for those tasks. The support from Novation was inconsistent at best and Mystrix is here to target this specific category.

Mystrix obviously isn’t going to replace Launchpad for music creations, the Ableton integration on Launchpad is superb and it will be very hard for Mystrix to match up with that. We want to focus on more customizable controls, more creative options, and more community-oriented supports. We don't just do serious stuffs here, also some fun and dumb stuffs.

What is the difference between a Mystrix and a Mystrix Pro?

Mystrix Pro have velocity-sensitive keypads and RGB underglow. The standartd Mystrix doesnt have velocity-sensitive keypads and RGB underglow.

Everything else will be the same, including software features, wireless capability, material, build quality, etc.

We will not constrain the capability of Mystrix’s software to a more advanced model.

What's the weight and size of Mystrix?

Mystrix has a weight of roughly 800 grams or 1.75lbs

Dimension of Mystrix is 205 * 205 * 12mm or 8.07 * 8.07 * 0.47 inches.

How is the wireless latency?

Mystrix currently only supports Bluetooth Midi. (More wireless modes are under development). The latency we tested is pretty good and mostly imperceptible, but we don't have a precise number we can provide or for you to compare to right now.

What sort of software support and after sales hardware support can potential customers expect and for how long?

We are committed to supporting Mystrix as long as possible we can!

A lot of our resources are going into community support and will continue so post-launch. We will not be releasing a Matrix 2 anytime soon and axe all supports for Mystrix. We built the Mystrix with all the cutting features to make sure it won't be obsolete anytime soon.

Another commitment we will be making is that we will not constrain the capability of Mystrix’s software to a more advanced model. (All software open sourced, someone will be able to do them anyways).

Mystrix that every user has will always be as capable as the hardware can handle until we can’t support it officially. To put our commitment into perspective, even though the new generation Matrix comes with a brand new Matrix OS that comes with a lot of great software features, we spent a lot of effort to make the very same OS run on the now almost 6-year-old and very limited Matrix Founder Edition without the advanced capability like wireless and velocity sensitive keypads. Even if we will not be able to support it anymore both hardware and software-wise, everything about this project is open-sourced and we welcome the community to step in.

What's the long-term plan to develop for the music creator side for Mystrix?

We have a lot of music creators working with us to work on more professional features that are suggested by them directly. Matrix is designed as generic as possible to allow it to do a lot of different tasks, unlike other midi devices designed to be strongly opinionated and linked with DAW. Two things that are in the works on right now are the sequencer/tracker app and DAW integrations (Mainly Ableton live due to that’s what most of the user base uses). We don’t want to release features that are not final or might be changing in the future, but we do release a lot of testing firmware for everyone to test and help us iterate on.

Who are the main target audience of Mystrix?

Visual performers are still the primary audience because this is an area we know well and have a lot of community support going on.

The secondary targeted audience is the tinkering community, Mystrix is a very complete package as a non-professional & open-sourced project, and we worked hard to promote community development. Tinker community has a lot of room to work with Mystrix. We want to see people creating experimental features on Mystrix using it's very generic design and powerful hardware capability. We want Matrix to be a supercharged and affordable Monome for those people.

The third audience will be professionals who are interested in adding dynamics to their setup. Mystrix gives a lot of freedom and flexibility to a music gear setup with the capability of a customizable control panel and wireless connectivity. We still don’t have many professional features ready for release yet but we love more music creators to help us make the ultimate creative controller.

Highly programmable

I've had my Mystrix for over a year now since I bought it for the express purpose of programming in my own functionality and it has served that role perfectly: I was able to write my own APP with a grid-based microtonal key arrangement for use with the MTS-ESP VST. Attached is a photo of the custom interface for that APP.

That's super cool and I want to see more people building stuffs like this on Mystrix! I built Mystrix & Matrix OS for people to starting making cool things they want that aren't commerically available. Unfouraturently there hasn't been been a lot of them happening at the moment. Hopefully we will start seeing a lot more once the API & Documentation matures.

Cool hardware, documentation needs work

I'm quite excited about having an 8x8 pad grid with velocity sensitivity that I can program myself, so enthusiastic about this project, and certainly hope it is successful, and encourage others to join in That said, the current state of the documentation is not great. I know it's a one person operation, but it would be good to hire a technical writer to fix this. Or even use ChatGPT. So many spelling errors for starters, which shouldn't be happening when we have spell checkers easily accessible. It might be a good idea to move the docs over to a GitHub wiki and get more people collaborating on them to improve them, if it's too much for one person.

I'm rating this as 3 stars for now just because I think with the docs in the state they are in, it is for enthusiasts, not mass market. Happy to revisit this in future if things improve.

polishment at the moment. The OS usage will be done within in 2 weeks for the OS 2.5 release and the development guide and API might take longer. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Also, I didn’t host it in the GitHub is because a dedicated site enables me to do more interactive stuffs than what the GitHub wiki offers, like the Mystrix visualizer widget. The site is actually on GitHub https://github.com/203-Systems/Matrix-Wiki and is open for contributions!

I will keep you and everyone updated with the latest progress of the project and I hope you will be happy about state of things soon!
